Ruahine School ‘The Best I Can Do, the Best I Can Be’  Tū māia au ki te mahi, tū rangatira au ki te ao!

We are a very proud, vibrant and child-centred full-primary school, nestled beneath the Ruahine Ranges approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Dannevirke.

Ruahine is a great school with great kids and great teachers. We love learning, sports, and the outdoors. Our kids climb trees, organise and run lunchtime games, and play bullrush. Our teachers also run lunchtime sports daily. We have our own indoor swimming pool, used extensively in Terms 1 and 4. Cross-country is run through the paddocks of a neighbouring farm; and lamb and calf day is a major yearly event at school. We have two adventure playgrounds, two enormous sandpits, a huge field, a large concrete court and a full size Astroturf.

Excellent learning progress and achievement is inspired and celebrated at Ruahine School. National Standards data in Reading, Writing and Mathematics are consistently reflective of our high standards and high expectations for teaching and learning. Our end of year 2016 data evidences this consistent achievement:

  • Mathematics: All learners 86.8% At/Above (24.8% Above); Māori learners 94.7% At/Above (26.3% Above)
  • Reading: All learners 86.8% At/Above (32.8% Above); Māori learners 87.5% (17/19) At/Above (47.4% Above)
  • Writing: All learners 84.6% At/Above (22.6% Above); Māori learners 84.2% At/Above (42.1% Above)

Our Year 7 Mathex team came first place in the Manawatu Mathex competition this year.

Our EPro8 (engineering problem solving) teams have been Manawatu/Whanganui finalists in both 2016 and 2017. We run our own robotics programme with Year 6-8 learners.

We have a very strong and proud Kapa Haka group, and a very talented choir. Our Year 8 learners have many opportunities to grow their leadership skills through our structured leadership programme.

Our ROCKERS values are our special identify and guide the caring, enthusiastic and collaborative way we learn and interact with each other.

Our school is the hub of our community and as such, community partnership and involvement is active, highly valued, and fundamental to our future-focused rural school.
